The County Highway Department maintains 150 miles of county highway and 31 bridge structures on the county road system. These interconnect with over 743 miles of township roads and 131 township bridges of the 15 townships. The County Engineer, under the direction of the County Board, makes improvements and maintenance to the county highways. Some of the Department duties include maintaining the shoulders, ditches, drainage structures and roadway maintenance on county highway system. The Department also provides inspection of all county and township bridges, reporting those findings to the Illinois Department of Transportation as required by Statute. Other duties are maintaining highway and construction equipment, signage, snow and ice removal. In conjunction with the County Board, the County Engineer sets priorities for highway new construction and maintenance; administers the preparation and letting of contract proposals for bridge and road constructions and directs the staff through contract completion. The Department is also responsible in reviewing and issuing overweight, utility, signage, access and drainage permits, among other things.
The County Engineer and his staff also provide professional expertise and act as advisor to the township highway commissioners. It is the Department’s primary goal to maintain good working relationships with the township highway commissioners, Illinois Department of Transportation, County Board and staffs, municipal staffs, and more importantly our residents. The Highway Department strongly believes that one can achieve success faster by working together as one unit and not individually.
